Bankers to Share £6.4 Billion Christmas Bonuses

Thursday, February 25th, 2010
eCommerce Associates asked:

Bankers at four leading City firms will share an estimated £6.4 billion Christmas bonus pool as thousands of workers lose their jobs or go on to short time.

Regardless of bringing the world economy to the brink of bankruptcy, employees of London banks Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch and Dresdner Kleinwort are expecting huge year-end bonuses.

Banks justify the payouts to best performers by saying if they don’t give them top salaries they risk seeing them go to rivals.

Wall Street giant Goldman Sachs has 5,400 staff in London expecting a £50,0000 Christmas present from their employer, who will share a bonus pot of £1.7billion, even though it plunged to a £1.4billion loss in the fourth quarter.

Goldman had to accept a handout from the US government to keep trading.

Morgan Stanley’s 5,000 London staff are also expected to receive around £50,000 each. The US government handed the bank a $6.4 billion hand out earlier in the £9.7billion in emergency funding from other investors.

Merrill Lynch also came unstuck. Although it has had to be taken over by Bank of America, it has set aside £2billion for performance bonuses, some of which will go to London staff.

German investment bank Commerzbank is taking over rival Dresdner Kleinwort, yet Kleinwort is giving over £350million to bankers and trading staff in London and Frankfurt.

The High Street had some Christmas cheer as tills took slightly more than last week but are still down year-on-year.

Harrison Ford Indiana Jones Workout

Friday, February 19th, 2010
Jimmy Smith asked:

Harrison Fords Indiana Jones workout is about as tough of a movie star workout as it gets. For Indiana Jones, Harrison Ford is performing an intense workout and nutrition regime since the movie requires him to be in top physical shape since he needs to sprint, jump, role, crawl and just about anything else that someone combing through long lost ruins would need to do. His girlfriend recently took a moment to talk about the nutrition that is fueling his tough workout.

He is on a strict high protein diet. He is eating lots of fish and vegetables said girlfriend Calista Flockhart.

I think it is pretty simple. I mean we can look at him and tell he is not using drugs, which is often the reason that most people give for celebs getting in great shape. Plus we over complicate fat loss, it is alot easier than we think.

Now I am not working with Harrison but I imagine his workout looks something like this.

3 to 4 days of full body workouts with multi joint movements

3 to 4 sets of 8 to 15 reps per set

Short rest, around 30 to 45 seconds between sets

Aerobic training 3 to 4 days per week for 30 to 45 minutes

What is so interesting about his workout is that it is not your typical bodybuilding one set then rest workout. Harrison Ford knows that he can not be filming a scene then all of a sudden have to rest because he is out of shape. That is not what you would want to see out of a global trotting, treasure finding archaeologist.

Instead, he is training with multiple exercises that increase his ability to burn fat. Aside from the advantage of working out while he is still trying to recover from the previous exercise he is also helping his body burn fat for 24-48 hours after he is done working out. This is known as EPOC or Excess Post Exercise Oxygen Consumption, which basically means that your body is trying to replace the oxygen that you lost during your workout so it is burning fat to do so.

Not so bad. He also has to get a lot of work done in a short amount of time. I have been on movie sets and know that the days are long and tiring, even for the lead actors. So I highly doubt that he wants to go to the gym around 9 or 10 at night when they are done shooting and do a hour or so workout followed by long and boring cardio. Instead he gets all of the benefits of a cardio session during his workout.

I do not think he is taking a lot of supplements either. He is probably not even taking protein powder but just getting his nutrients from whole food.

Here is what I would have him do to build muscle and lose fat for the new Indiana Jones workout.

Everything would be timed rounds. So he would have to complete four exercises then rest for 60 seconds then he would go back to the first exercise again. After three sets of each he would then move to second round of exercises. We would do 3 sets of 3 different rounds, everything 12 reps.

1st round

Pull-ups

Push-ups

Bodyweight Squats

Bodyweight Lunges

2nd round

Dips

Close Grip Push-ups

Flat Dumbbell Chest Press

Box Jumps

3rd round

Dumbbell Step-ups

Hi Cable Chops

Front Medicine Ball Squats

The Truth About Gold Detectors

Thursday, February 11th, 2010
Mara Mark asked:

All gold detectors are based on the same technology. Of course there are different types and models but they are all variations of the same electromagnetic technology. A magnetic field is created inside the gold detector that reacts with the magnetic field of a metal on the ground. The metal detector has the ability to convert this reaction into a signal that tells you that metal has been found on the ground.

The most important aspect of gold detectors is tuning. You have to carefully calibrate the gold detector to properly receive the signals from the ground, depending on what you are searching for. Often, this process must be performed (usually by pressing a button) every few minutes depending on the gold detector type.

Another important factor is motion. Some gold detectors require a fairly slow swinging action while others need a much quicker action. For best results you have to use the speed which is considered as optimal by the manufacturer. Carefully read the gold detector’s manual before performing any searches.

Last but not least, frequency. Most gold detectors operate in low signal frequencies between 5-10khz and 15-20khz. The reason for that is because low frequencies go deeper into the ground. If you are targeting objects like rings, coins or similar objects then low frequencies between 5-20Khz is what you need. Some multi-frequency gold detectors (which are very expensive) have appeared in the market the last few years, claiming advantages in gold detection and depth performance. In my opinion all these claims are overstated.

I’ve noticed that not a single gold detector manufacturer ever specify the detection depth of their machines. This is always confusing. The reason is that there are many things that affect the depth detection like the ground type, moisture etc. Gold detector manufacturers will not specify a specific depth range (eg. 10 meters) because another manufacturer will immediately specify a higher range (e.g. 11 meters). In my opinion gold detector depth range is almost the same for all brands of the same type.

Another half-truth is that the deeper you can go into the ground the more treasure you can find. I think that this is not the case. The deeper you go, the less you will find. If someone would burry a treasure 300 years ago how deep do you think he would dig? I think the average depth would be about 10 meters. Archeologists discovered treasures hidden for thousands of years, buried in the ground in less than 5 meters in depth.
