Scott Porter Joins the Cast of Speed Racer

Friday, April 30th, 2010
Groshan Fabiola asked:

Star of the NBC drama series Friday Night Lights Scott Porter is momentarily leaving the football field to take a trip on the racing track. Earlier this month, twenty seven year old Porter was made an addition to the upcoming film Speed Racer’s cast. The movie is a live-action adaptation of the popular 1960’s Japanese animated series of the same name. Emile Hirsch, who was popularized through his role as Matthew Kidman in 2004’s Girl Next Door, is set to play the fearless and aggressive racecar driver. The Wachowski brothers are set to direct the film, and Joel Silvers from Silver Pictures will be the film’s producer.

Currently known as Jason Street on Friday Night Lights, Porter is set to play the role of Speed Racer’s older brother, Rex Racer. However, before he joined the cast of the football drama series, Porter played Matthew on the off-Broadway production entitled Altar Boyz. He also appeared on four episodes of the Emmy award-winning soap opera, As the World Turns and on ABC’s Ugly Betty’s pilot episode.

Speed Racer isn’t Porter’s first big screen gig. He has played the role of PoP! member Colin Thompson in the romantic comedy Music & Lyrics, which starred Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore in 2007 and in the same year appeared in the thriller Descent, playing a small role. Descent starred Rosario Dawson and The 4400’s Chad Faust. Porter has also recently concluded an upcoming film entitled Prom Night.

Speed Racer’s cast also includes Christina Ricci as Trixie, Speed’s girlfriend, Matthew Fox as Racer X, Speed’s rival, John Goodman as Pops Racer, Speed’s father, Susan Sarandon as Mom Racer, Speed’s mother and Paulie Litt as Spritle, Speed’s younger brother. Other elements from the animated series that have been adapted into the film are Speed’s pet chimpanzee, Chim Chim, and his primary race vehicle, Mach 5.

The movie has begun filming in Berlin and is set to be released on May 9, 2008.

Adventure Travel Tips, Deals, And Destinations

Sunday, April 18th, 2010
Frank Johnson asked:

For some people, taking city tours, visiting breweries, and lying out on the beach just isn’t enough. These tourists want a trip filled with adventure; one that’s off the beaten path. Adventure travel is a specialized type of travel that isn’t filled with the typical tour buses and bed-and-breakfasts. Adventure travel engulfs a more exploratory sense of the word “travel”. Adventure travelers would rather hike up a mountain, trek through a jungle, or ride white water rapids than sit in an air conditioned bus and be chauffeured from place to place.

However, although adventure travelers don’t partake in all-inclusive resort stays, adventure travel can still be quite expensive. That’s because the destinations adventure travelers travel to (and the activities they do) often require special guides, groups, and sometimes equipment.

If you want a change of scenery and want to experience adventure travel, here are some tips on how to make it more affordable. Follow these tips and save a few bucks for when you’re in-country.

Adventure Travel Tips and Deals

Tip #1: Find Affordable Airfare to Your Adventure Travel Destination

Regardless of what you do when you arrive at your destination, getting there can be costly. Airfare will always be a factor in your travel budget, regardless of if you’re traveling to go on a safari, hike the Himalayas, or lay on a beach. Flying is an expensive way to travel; however, thanks to the Internet, it doesn’t have to be. The Internet is filled with deals on airfare to destinations all over the world. If you’re planning an adventure travel trip, search the web for airfare and budget travel deals. The web is jam packed with travel web sites offering amazing rates on airfare to many travel destinations. So if you’re planning an adventure travel trip, find airfare deals online.

Tip #2: Book Your Adventure Travel Adventures When You Get There

Since adventure travel takes you off the beaten path, it’s fairly simple to find great deals on rooms, materials, and tours in the outskirts of town. However, if you try to book a room or find a tour guide before you leave, you’ll probably have to deal with a middleman to book your accommodations; and anytime you deal with a middleman, the more it’s going to cost you. The middleman will most likely charge you some sort of service or finders fee. By waiting until you are in-country to book your accommodations and materials, you’ll be able to cut out the middleman and save some money on your adventure travel.

However, before you jump on the plane, it’s a good idea to check out adventure travel blogs and websites online. They’ll help you get in touch with other adventure travelers who can give you advice on who you should contact when in-country to make the necessary arrangements. You don’t want to journey to a foreign land completely blind.

Tip #3: Find an Adventure Travel Group to Travel With

Believe it or not, there are travel groups out there that specialize in adventure travel. These groups are experienced in adventure travel and have the right connections to get you deals on your trip. Adventure travel groups normally travel as a group and benefit from group rates. They also have connections with people in other countries to plan the best and most affordable activities. Planning an adventure travel trip on your own can be complicated and very costly. By finding an adventure travel group and going with them on their adventures, you’ll be able to cut down the cost of your trip and also meet some new people along the way.

GW – Girl Power: It’s Time to Embrace It

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010
Natalie asked:

There is no question that women have moved forward in the world. Just a few decades ago, the hope for most women has been that they will be raised by nice father and marry men who will treat them like children – pampered children, but children nonetheless. However, the number of women in top CEO positions – and those who are heads of state or hold important roles in state government – shows us that women can definitely achieve great heights in this world.

Yet, there are places in the world where women have few choices – or none at all. In this world where so many of us have so many opportunities, it’s important to realize that there are millions of girls and women who are sold into slavery or forced into war. There are women whose children are ripped from their arms and sold to the highest bidder and women who work long hours in bad conditions for a fraction of what a man would earn in her place.

A fashion Web site may seem a strange place to talk about the plight of women, but there’s no question that beauty is a quest for women the world over. It’s in our genes to seek beauty and to create it. It’s how we’re wired.

Our common bond of all things beautiful can remind us of our sisters in other places. A dress with a tribal flair calls to mind our girlfriends in Africa, and a kimono sleeve is reminiscent of our friends in Japan. Jeans with an edge have that American casual feeling, while a dainty dress speaks of an English garden party. Italy’s knitwear is revered the world over (it’s possible to find all these pieces online from Glamway24.com). All of the lovely things we live with are based on someone’s culture, someone’s craft.

Beautiful things come from everywhere. Embrace beauty and create as much of it as you can. Speak out about ugliness.

Who knows? Maybe someday we’ll win the battle.

Indiana Jones Costume: Let the Adventure Begin

Friday, April 2nd, 2010
Ronda Luve asked:

Indiana Jones is back. As a result, this ultimate screen hero is destined to be one of the hottest costumes for Halloween among kids and adults alike.

To achieve just the right look, you’ll need to prepare your Indy gear. Below is a list of must-have items to pull off the best Indiana Jones costume in town.

The Fedora – First and foremost, you’ll need to secure Indy’s signature Fedora. Indiana Jones and his Fedora is iconic and is known to rarely leave his head. This hat is integral to the character of Indiana Jones and designed to capture his essence.

The Jacket – Indy’s jacket goes hand in hand with the Fedora. It is inspired by the leather jackets of the 1930s that preceded the advent of the famous A-2 jacket worn by American fighter and bomber pilots in World War II.

The Shoulder Bag – Although Indiana Jones used his shoulder bag to store things like pencils, maps and other props, this element of your Indiana Jones costume can be used to store the plans for your tricks or to collect lots of treats.

The Boots – Like Indy, your boots should have a strong tread and not be too heavy. After all, you need to be ready to run (in case you get spooked).

The Bullwhip – One of the oldest weapons in human history, Indiana Jones used his leather bullwhip to hold his enemies at bay and swing across ravines. This weapon will definitely come in handy to scare off any unwelcome ghost or goblins knocking at your door (and for the kids, the monsters in the closet). Although Indy used a 10 foot bullwhip, shorter replicas will fit the bill to top off this costume. But, whatever you do, don’t get too excited about swinging your whip around. This weapon takes great skill to use efficiently and without inflicting unnecessary pain upon yourself or others.

The Pistol, Holster and Belt – The bullwhip is not Indy’s only weapon of choice. Usually a World War I era revolver, this weapon is a great backup to defend against the scary creatures of the night. Replicas (not the real thing here folks) are available online and include the leather flap holster and belt.

Shirts and Pants – With your accessories in place, you must not forget Indy’s signature khaki pants and Safari shirt.

The above items should make your Indiana Jones Costume complete. While you may need to substitute items here and there, remember that an adventurous attitude will bring your costume to life. Once you put your ensemble together, with attitude in check, the journey begins…
