Star of the NBC drama series Friday Night Lights Scott Porter is momentarily leaving the football field to take a trip on the racing track. Earlier this month, twenty seven year old Porter was made an addition to the upcoming film Speed Racer’s cast. The movie is a live-action adaptation of the popular 1960′s Japanese animated series of the same name. Emile Hirsch, who was popularized through his role as Matthew Kidman in 2004′s Girl Next Door, is set to play the fearless and aggressive racecar driver. The Wachowski brothers are set to direct the film, and Joel Silvers from Silver Pictures will be the film’s producer.

Currently known as Jason Street on Friday Night Lights, Porter is set to play the role of Speed Racer’s older brother, Rex Racer. However, before he joined the cast of the football drama series, Porter played Matthew on the off-Broadway production entitled Altar Boyz. He also appeared on four episodes of the Emmy award-winning soap opera, As the World Turns and on ABC’s Ugly Betty’s pilot episode.

Speed Racer isn’t Porter’s first big screen gig. He has played the role of PoP! member Colin Thompson in the romantic comedy Music & Lyrics, which starred Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore in 2007 and in the same year appeared in the thriller Descent, playing a small role. Descent starred Rosario Dawson and The 4400’s Chad Faust. Porter has also recently concluded an upcoming film entitled Prom Night.

Speed Racer’s cast also includes Christina Ricci as Trixie, Speed’s girlfriend, Matthew Fox as Racer X, Speed’s rival, John Goodman as Pops Racer, Speed’s father, Susan Sarandon as Mom Racer, Speed’s mother and Paulie Litt as Spritle, Speed’s younger brother. Other elements from the animated series that have been adapted into the film are Speed’s pet chimpanzee, Chim Chim, and his primary race vehicle, Mach 5.

The movie has begun filming in Berlin and is set to be released on May 9, 2008.

Groshan Fabiola asked:

Matthew Fox certainly loves a good ride and an adventure. On television, he’s been on one of the most exciting and engaging adventures, as the surgeon turned plane crash survivor turned mysterious island resident, Jack Shephard, on the hit ABC suspense drama, Lost. If his character stays alive until Lost wraps up as scheduled sometime in 2010, Fox would have been on this amazing ride for six years, since the show started in 2004.

On the big screen, the actor is currently working on the film adaptation of the `60s animated series, Speed Racer. Matthew Fox plays the role of the mysteriously complex Racer X, in the movie which is scheduled for release in May of next year. In related news, Nayo Wallace of The Brothers and Sleeper Cell has been cast as Racer X’s love interest, Minx. Emile Hirsch from The Girl Next Door and Lords of Dogtown plays the title role of Speed Racer, in a stellar cast which includes Christina Ricci as his girlfriend, Trixie, and John Goodman and Susan Sarandon as his parents, Pops and Mom Racer.

Speed Racer the movie is being directed by the magnificent Wachowski brothers who were responsible for the highly successful and groundbreaking Matrix trilogy. They are reportedly using a unique technique for filming the race sequences involving Speed Racer’s Mach 5, which is the star automobile of the story. Using an actual car suspended in mid-air inside the studio, the brothers will reportedly make use of their trademark, computer-generated special effects, to simulate the rest of the racing scenery. This innovative approach in place of actually filming a race sequence almost certainly ensures more breathtaking and fantastic rallies and chases in the film.

While the role is a bit of a departure from his Lost character, Speed Racer sounds like another incredible treat for Matthew Fox followers.

Vince Platania, Jr. asked:

Despite the longest title possible, Indy is back. The year isn’t 1936 (Raiders of the Lost Ark), 1935 (Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) or even 1938 (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade), but 1957. The shift to a new decade is one of the reasons the film works, as co-creators Steven Spielberg and George Lucas do an excellent job of placing bare-knuckled Indiana so far into the next decade.

This time, the Nazis are out and the Commies are in. While it might have been easy to make the two interchangeable, or worst, draw some comparison to the current political climate, Spielberg, Lucas and screenwriter David Koepp (Jurassic Park, The Shadow, Spider-Man) nail the chilling paranoia of the 1950′s. Indiana (Harrison Ford) gets his own taste of Red Scare when he survives a close brush with eerie Soviet officer Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett) and winds up on the receiving end of FBI suspicion. Spalko delivers an unnerving speech about her plan to use the psychic power of the crystal skull to change the way America thinks. It’s a spine-tingling commentary on subtle Cold War subversion.

Of course, Indiana Jones isn’t alone in his efforts to prevent Soviet domination. His first ally is the treacherous Mac (Ray Winstone), whose loyalties shift multiple times during the movie. His more dependable sidekick is grease-monkey Mutt Williams (Shia LeBeouf), the son of Indy’s Raider flame Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen). John Hurt also plays Harold Oxley, a mutual friend of Indy and Marion who’s become a babbling wreck upon discovering the eponymous crystal skull.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is a solid expansion of the original trilogy. Everyone on the cast enjoys excellent chemistry, especially between LeBeouf and Ford. There are a few moments when Lucas and Keopp clearly wrote themselves up the creek without a paddle, like when they chose to interrupt a brilliant swordfight between Mutt and Irina with “monkey business”, or when Indiana can offer no better reason to return the crystal skull other than “it told me to.” But though the latest Indiana Jones doesn’t reach the same height as Raiders or Last Crusade, it does manage to blow the uneven Temple of Doom out of the water, all with a 64 year old star who still has what it takes to crack a bullwhip.

Deb Bromley asked:

Kids parties have become the latest craze, and coming up with unique and fun themes and activities for children’s birthday parties and other events can be daunting. More and more parents are faced with the need to find new and creative ways to entertain throngs of classmates, neighborhood friends, and siblings of various ages.

One simple, low-cost, and very popular way to entertain children at any kind of celebration or gathering, indoors or out, is with a good old-fashioned treasure hunt. A treasure hunt is the one party game that truly promotes interaction, naturally evokes squeals of excitement, and leaves your party guests with lasting memories of their adventurous day at your child’s party.

What if your child doesn’t want a pirate-themed party? No problem! Treasure hunts aren’t just for pirates. Tradition has dictated that pirates are the great treasure hunters, but the fact of the matter is treasure hunts are loved by boys, girls, and grown-ups alike, and make a great addition to any party theme. Treasure hunts can be simply adapted with a storyline and a variety of decorations to fit into any party theme. This is the one area of planning where your child might already have a very clear idea of what they would like, and it would be wise to involve them in this decision, as it makes the party their own.

To adapt a treasure hunt for a princess-themed party, for example, you might announce that someone has stolen the princess’s jewels, and whoever finds them by following the clues will be rewarded with a share of the loot. You place a jewelry box overflowing with plastic beads, candy necklaces and rings, and other gem-like treats in the center of the party table, and have someone sneak the treasure away during the party before making the announcement. Other themes and decorations might revolve around the latest TV cartoon characters, superheroes, pop idols, a holiday, or your child might want to create their own theme.

That being said, be careful not to fall into the parent trap of spending a small fortune buying themed party goods. Consider purchasing just a few themed bright and colorful decorations and/or centerpieces, and then either complement them with less expensive coordinating party supplies and decorations, or make your own — there are plenty of great fun ways to put you and your child’s artistic talent to work to customize your party.

Some crafty ideas kids may love making or having at their party include authentic-looking weathered pirate treasure maps, princess crowns and jewelry, spyglasses made from paper towel rolls, pinatas (handmade or bought), cardboard hooks inserted into the bottom of styrofoam cups to wear on their hands like Captain Hook, paper or felt decorated pirate hats, and bejeweled and personalized loot bags, to name only a few.

Although it requires some time, creativity, and resources, you can make and stage your own treasure hunt game to play as a group or competitively in teams. Design and hide 10 clever clues that lead players step-by-step from one clue to the next, hidden amongst common objects, to ultimately discover the hidden treasure, which might be sacks of “loot” consisting of candy such as chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil, or party favors, toys, and other items valuable to children.

Alternatively, if you’re short on time, money, and party ideas like many busy parents and party planners, online sites such as Treasure-Adventure.com offer affordable complete treasure hunts with pre-made custom clues full of rhymes and riddles that kids love to solve, the design of which can be the most time-consuming and difficult part of preparing a treasure hunt.

Use creativity to build your party further around the hunt for a truly fantastic and memorable party that your child and his or her guests will talk about long after the party is over. Although the treasure hunt will likely be the main attraction since it is the most action-packed and engaging, don’t necessarily limit other activities that might complement the hunt such as a cannonball toss using bean bags or water balloons, “Walk the Plank” using a shallow pool full of plastic alligators and snakes, pan for gold using gold spray-painted rock nuggets, dress in costumes, hold a peg-leg relay, make a castle or pirate ship out of an appliance box, play “Blackbeard says,” etc. — the sky is the limit!

Treasure hunts are also not just limited to children or birthday parties, but are perfect for family fun night, slumber parties, classroom parties, picnics, and other group events. Treasure hunts bring parties alive with hours of challenging and fun entertainment, with the thrill of the hunt along with the solving of puzzles often being the most enjoyable and memorable part of the day. And don’t think you can’t top your last party. By using a variety of themes, new treasure hunt clues and decorations, and a little creativity, you can throw many more successful and unique parties for years to come that never go out of style.

“If you’re up to the challenge, spyglass and compass in hand, yer prize is in sight, so let the adventure begin!”
